Gastric Ulcer Study Application

This study is for ALL endurance horses, not just those you suspect have ulcers.  The study is to reveal how many endurance horses have ulcers.

Clinics will be scheduled and locations selected based on convenience.

Study horses need to be actively involved in the sport of endurance.

(i.e. training, doing 25’s, 50’s or 100’s)

You must be willing to have your horse sedated if necessary.

A nominal FEE of $50 per horse must be paid when appointment is made.

(Fee comparison survey reveled it cost $150 - $250 plus call to scope a horse.)

You will be required to provide detailed information when you make your appointment.

(i.e. feeding program, housing data, travel habits, ride history, training program, etc)

Detailed information concerning treatment and prevention of ulcers will be provided.

Tentatively the clinics will start in April 03 and should last 6 months.

To apply, please complete the form below. You will be contacted within 3 months to discuss a schedule.

Can you organize a clinic with 15 or more horses?

--- Spirit's out there grazing in the pasture, a survivor of a violent colic attack at Bryce last fall brought on by unknown gastric ulcers.

Believe me, those were the last possible thing on my mind as he meets only one of the "accepted" risks (fast travel). He's on 24 hour turnout, good body condition, never exhibited prior colicy symptoms, is NEVER fed grains or sweetfeeds or pelleted feeds, (eats only alfalfa, bermuda, forage and beet pulp), is an excellent camper (no pacing in camp, just observes camp life and eats).

So, we're here to tell you all that it can happen without any warnings whatsoever. An excellent reason to articipate in Barney's upcoming project even if you don't think your horse is at risk. I paid $300 for the scoping -- at one time I heard Barney say $80,but I seem to remember seeing somewhere $50. Regardless, it's a bargain.

At any rate, there is life after ulcers -- and $3500 in vet bills for gastrogard and emergency treatment. We did the LD at Wickenberg last weekend as a test to see how he's doing. I realized that of course we SHOULD have gone ahead and done the 50 since he was perfect.
